Originally a traditional British holiday, the day after Christmas has been adopted by a number of other countries. It was once a day off for servants, especially those who had to work on Christmas day, and it was the day they received a box of gifts — hence “Boxing Day.” Although maybe it should be “Unboxing Day”?
You can celebrate your own Boxing Day by giving gifts to the people whose services you regularly use: stylists, postal workers, house cleaners, gardeners, the staff at your local bodega. Spread the holiday cheer!
