Women didn't get the right to apply for mortgages on their own until 1974. That's when the Equal Credit Opportunity Act was passed. Before that, financial institutions could refuse to lend to unmarried women or could require a male co-signer, and a married woman needed her husband's permission to apply for a mortgage on her own.
